ChatGPT became the default AI interface. Dozens of "private ChatGPT alternatives" have launched since. Most are thin wrappers around the same cloud APIs. Here are the actually-private ones.
The wrapper problem
Most "private" chatbots are UI wrappers around OpenAI or Anthropic APIs. "Private" means "we don't store the chat" — but OpenAI does. The architecture is unchanged.
The real private category
Private LLM (on-device, one-time purchase). Locally AI (MLX-native, iOS 26). Ollama for desktop. These run the model locally. Your chats physically cannot go anywhere.
The quality delta
On-device models are smaller than GPT-4 or Claude. For "explain quantum chromodynamics with poetry" they're worse. For daily assistant workloads — summarisation, structuring, conversation — the gap is small and shrinking.
When to still use cloud AI
For bounded, non-sensitive tasks with explicit privacy awareness — one-off research questions, code help with non-proprietary code, creative writing exercises. Use cloud AI consciously for these, not as a default.
The full replacement
Sovereign is not a ChatGPT replacement — it's a private AI assistant that happens to include a chat. The app walkthrough covers the full surface: journal, notes, tasks, knowledge graph, coach. Chat is one feature of six.
About Sovereign — A privacy-first AI personal assistant that runs entirely on your iPhone. On-device LLM, zero-knowledge encryption, and a coach that learns from your own words. See how it works or visit the homepage.
